Introduction
Silverwood School and Nursery, open in 1997, is situated in the former Victorian chapel and memorial hall in Silkstone and located just two miles from junction 37 of the M1. It is a sister school to Cliff School and Little Cliff Nursery in Wakefield with the same Directors.
The complete refurbishment of the premises and the construction of an architecturally-designed building has resulted in a purpose-built school and nursery unit which is completly new. Silverwood School is the only independent school in west Barnsley and the first new independent school in the borough for over fifteen years.
| Silverwood
School Silverwood School is small, friendly and caring with a strong academic philosophy and great stress is placed on the social and moral development of the child. The size of the school and family atmosphere means that children are offered very personal attention; this coupled with the courtesy engendered in the children leads to smooth progression to other schools at 7 + years. |

In the school, children pass through Kindergarten, Transition, Forms I and II before leaving at 7 + years to other schools; girls are given a guarantee of a place at Cliff School in the Junior Department. Children are accepted at Silverwood School as and when places become available. Kindergarten is the first form in the pre-prep department of the school, taking children at three and a half years of age in the academic year in which they are four.
From the Kindergarten children will learn both social and academic skills; they will learn to read, write and manipulate numbers and participate in skills-based activities. We believe that children should be exposed to a broad curriculum and this is reflected in the variety of subjects on offer - some of which utilise the skills of specialist teachers.
